### [What Is Tonal Chiropractic? A Gentler Approach to Spinal Care](https://www.bepurewell.com/blog/what-is-tonal-chiropractic/)
Discover how tonal chiropractic uses light, precise contacts to restore nervous system balance — no cracking or forceful manipulation.
When most people think of chiropractic care, they imagine the "crack" of a manual adjustment. While traditional chiropractic has helped millions, there's a different approach that many patients find more comfortable and equally effective — tonal chiropractic.
At Pure Wellness, tonal chiropractic is at the heart of our practice. Here's what it is, how it works, and why it might be right for you.
The Basics: Tone, Not Force
Traditional chiropractic focuses on the structure of the spine — finding misaligned vertebrae and using force to move them back into position. Tonal chiropractic takes a different approach. Instead of focusing on bones, it focuses on the nervous system.
"Tone" refers to the natural tension and responsiveness of your nervous system — specifically the spinal cord and the protective membranes (meninges) that surround it. When your nervous system has healthy tone, your body communicates efficiently, adapts to stress, and heals itself. When that tone is disrupted, you may experience pain, tension, fatigue, or a general sense that something is "off."
Tonal chiropractic uses light, precise contacts at specific points along the spine to help your nervous system recalibrate and restore its natural balance.
How Is It Different from Traditional Chiropractic?
The differences are significant — especially for patients who are nervous about manual adjustments:
- Light touch vs. high force — Tonal adjustments use fingertip pressure or specialized instruments rather than forceful thrusting. There is no twisting, cracking, or popping.
- Nervous system vs. bones — Rather than pushing a bone into place, tonal chiropractic sends a precise signal to your nervous system, allowing your body to make the correction itself.
- Whole-spine approach — Traditional chiropractic often targets individual segments. Tonal care recognizes that the spine functions as a single, connected system — tension in one area affects everything else.
- Relaxing, not startling — Most patients find tonal adjustments deeply calming. Many are surprised by how gentle the process is.
What the Research Shows
Tonal chiropractic isn't just gentle — it's backed by compelling research. A landmark study by researchers at the University of California, Irvine surveyed nearly 3,000 patients receiving tonal chiropractic care. Over 90% reported improvements in their physical state and ability to handle stress, and over 85% reported improvements in mental and emotional well-being. Notably, the study found no ceiling to the benefits — the longer patients received care, the greater their improvements continued to be.
Research from the University of Southern California found that tonal chiropractic produces measurable changes in how the spine and nervous system communicate. Using surface EMG analysis, researchers discovered that signals from the neck and lower spine became mathematically synchronized during care — a sign of a more integrated and efficient nervous system.
In a randomized, controlled trial published in Molecular Psychiatry, patients in an addiction treatment program who received tonal chiropractic care (using the Torque Release Technique) had a 100% program retention rate, compared to 56% for standard treatment alone. They also showed significant reductions in anxiety and depression — evidence that tonal chiropractic can influence neurological function well beyond pain relief.
Who Benefits Most?
Tonal chiropractic is safe and effective for virtually anyone, but it's especially well-suited for certain groups.
Pregnant Women
Pregnant women experience rapid changes in their bodies — ligaments loosen, the pelvis shifts, and the spine bears new loads. Forceful adjustments can be uncomfortable or risky during this time. Tonal techniques like the Webster Technique use gentle sacral contacts to balance the pelvis and reduce intrauterine constraint, helping create the best conditions for baby's positioning. Research reports an 82% success rate in relieving the musculoskeletal causes of difficult fetal positioning.
Learn more about how chiropractic care supports pregnancy and prenatal health.
Older Adults
Older adults with osteoporosis or fragile bones face real risk from forceful manual adjustments. Tonal chiropractic eliminates that concern entirely — there is no high-velocity thrust, so fracture is not a possibility. Studies of older adults receiving instrument-based tonal care show significant improvements in both physical function and quality of life. Research also shows that chiropractic care can improve balance and body awareness, which helps prevent falls.

Patients with Disc Problems
Patients with disc problems such as herniated or bulging discs may find that the rotational forces of a traditional adjustment aggravate their condition. Tonal techniques work with the spine in a neutral position — no twisting — which allows healing without additional stress on injured discs.
Explore our full range of chiropractic care options or see how massage therapy can complement your recovery.
Everyone Else
You don't need a specific condition to benefit. Many patients simply prefer a gentler approach. If the idea of being "cracked" makes you uncomfortable, tonal chiropractic offers the same goal — better nervous system function — through a calmer path.
What to Expect at Pure Wellness in Denham Springs
At Pure Wellness, Dr. Rick R. Nash brings over 30 years of experience to every adjustment. A typical tonal chiropractic visit involves:
- Assessment — Dr. Nash evaluates your spine through posture analysis, leg length checks, and gentle palpation to identify areas of tension.
- Adjustment — Using light fingertip contacts at specific points along your spine, Dr. Nash provides precise input that helps your nervous system release stored tension and restore balance.
- Response — Many patients notice changes immediately — a sense of relaxation, easier breathing, or reduced tension. Others notice shifts over the following days as their body continues to integrate the adjustment.
The process is gentle, quick, and many patients find it deeply relaxing.
More Than Pain Relief
One of the most important things to understand about tonal chiropractic is that it's not just about fixing back pain — though it certainly helps with that. By optimizing nervous system function, tonal care supports your body's ability to handle stress, sleep better, think more clearly, and maintain overall well-being. It's care designed not just to get you back to where you were, but to help you function at your best.

### [Prenatal & Pediatric Chiropractic: A Guide for Families](https://www.bepurewell.com/blog/prenatal-pediatric-chiropractic-care/)
Gentle prenatal & pediatric chiropractic care in Denham Springs, LA — supporting pregnancy comfort, newborn health, and childhood wellness.
One of the most common questions we hear at Pure Wellness is some version of: _"Is chiropractic care safe for my baby?"_ or _"Can I get adjusted while I'm pregnant?"_ These are questions we hear all the time, and we're always happy to answer them.
As both a mom and a naturopathic practitioner, I understand the mix of curiosity and caution that comes with exploring chiropractic care during pregnancy or for your little ones. That's why I want to walk you through what the research says and what we do here at Pure Wellness in Denham Springs.
Prenatal Chiropractic Care
Pregnancy is one of the most extraordinary things a body can do. It's also one of the most physically demanding. As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts forward, your pelvis widens, your ligaments loosen under the influence of the hormone relaxin, and your spine bears loads it has never carried before. These are normal, healthy changes — but they can also be uncomfortable.
Why It Matters During Pregnancy
Research suggests that 50 to 80 percent of pregnant women experience low back pain at some point during their pregnancy. Pelvic pain, hip discomfort, and difficulty sleeping are all common as the body adapts to a rapidly changing load. A systematic review by Stuber and Smith confirmed that chiropractic care is effective for pregnancy-related low back pain.
The goal of prenatal chiropractic care is straightforward: help your pelvis and spine stay balanced so your body can adapt to pregnancy with less pain and better function.
The Webster Technique
You may have heard of the Webster Technique, especially in pregnancy circles. Developed by Dr. Larry Webster, it's a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment focused on the sacrum — the triangular bone at the base of your spine.
Here's the key concept: when the pelvis is misaligned or the surrounding muscles and ligaments are imbalanced, it can reduce the space available for the baby to move and position itself. The Webster Technique uses a gentle sacral contact to restore pelvic balance and reduce tension in the round ligaments, which may help create a more favorable environment for the baby to settle into an optimal position.
A study by Pistolese found that 82% of practitioners using the Webster Technique reported successful outcomes when working with women whose babies were in a non-optimal position. The Webster Technique is a chiropractic technique — not an obstetric procedure — that optimizes the mother's pelvic environment. The baby does the turning on its own when given the room to do so. The ICPA provides excellent information on the technique for families who want to learn more.
Pain Relief Without Medication
For many pregnant women, one of the most appealing aspects of chiropractic care is that it offers a drug-free option for pain management. Conditions like symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), round ligament pain, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction can make daily life difficult, yet many common pain relievers are either restricted or discouraged during pregnancy.
Gentle, tonal chiropractic care — the kind we provide at Pure Wellness — uses no forceful manipulation, no twisting, and no cracking. It's a light, precise approach that many of our pregnant patients find both effective and deeply relaxing. The American Pregnancy Association recognizes chiropractic care as a safe and beneficial option during pregnancy for conditions including low back pain, sciatica, and pelvic discomfort.
Can Chiropractic Care Improve Labor Outcomes?
This is one of the more interesting areas of research. A study by Fallon reported that women who received chiropractic care throughout pregnancy experienced a 24% reduction in average labor time for first-time mothers and a 39% reduction for women who had given birth before.
A well-aligned pelvis logically supports more efficient labor mechanics, and many of our patients report positive birth experiences.
Safety During Pregnancy
Chiropractic care is widely recognized as safe for uncomplicated pregnancies. At Pure Wellness, Dr. Nash modifies his approach based on where you are in your pregnancy — positioning, pressure, and technique are all adapted as your body changes. In the later trimesters, you'll never be asked to lie face-down; we use positioning that keeps you comfortable and your baby safe.
As with any care during pregnancy, we recommend discussing chiropractic with your OB or midwife. We're happy to coordinate with your birth team.
Chiropractic Care for Newborns and Infants
This is the area where parents tend to have the most questions — and understandably so. Pediatric chiropractic in general uses much lighter techniques than adult care, and with the tonal approach we use at Pure Wellness, it's even gentler than most parents expect.
Why Would a Newborn Need Chiropractic Care?
Birth, even under the best circumstances, is a physically intense process for both mother and baby. Whether it's a long labor, a rapid delivery, vacuum or forceps assistance, or a cesarean section, the forces involved can sometimes result in minor spinal tension in the newborn. Parents often bring infants to our office for concerns like:
- Colic — persistent, unexplained crying
- Latching or breastfeeding difficulties — sometimes related to jaw or neck tension
- Torticollis — a head tilt or preference for turning one direction
- General fussiness or difficulty settling
How Gentle Is It, Really?
This is the question every parent asks, and it's the right one. Pediatric chiropractic — especially the tonal approach we use — is nothing like what you might imagine.
The amount of pressure used on a newborn is typically no more than what you'd use to test the ripeness of a tomato — roughly two pounds of fingertip pressure. With instruments like the Integrator (a handheld tool that delivers a precise, low-force impulse), the contact is even lighter and faster than a manual touch. There is no cracking, no twisting, and no forceful movements. Many babies sleep right through their adjustment.
What the Research Shows
The evidence varies by condition:
Colic has the strongest research support. A randomized controlled trial by Miller and colleagues found that infants receiving chiropractic care cried approximately 1.5 hours less per day than those in a control group. A systematic review by Alcantara and colleagues found a number needed to treat (NNT) of 6.5 — meaning that for roughly every 6 to 7 infants treated, one experienced clinically meaningful improvement beyond what would be expected from natural resolution alone. These are encouraging results.
Breastfeeding difficulties have moderate support. Case reports and smaller studies suggest that addressing cervical and cranial tension in newborns can improve latching, and more research is underway.
Reflux, sleep issues, and ear infections in infants are areas where the evidence is largely anecdotal. Parents frequently report improvements, and we look forward to more research in these areas.
Safety
Pediatric chiropractic care has a strong safety record. The most commonly reported side effects are mild and brief — some babies may be a little fussy after an adjustment, but this typically passes within minutes. The American Academy of Pediatrics has acknowledged the growing use of integrative and complementary therapies in pediatric care.
Chiropractic Care for Children
As children grow, their bodies face new demands — growth spurts, sports, heavy backpacks, and increasingly, long hours hunched over screens. Chiropractic care can play a supportive role in helping children navigate these physical challenges.
Common Reasons Parents Bring Children In
The most common reasons families bring their children to Pure Wellness include:
- Growing pains — aches in the legs and back that accompany rapid growth
- Posture concerns — especially related to screen time and heavy school bags
- Sports injuries — sprains, strains, and the cumulative impact of athletics
- Headaches — tension-type headaches that may respond to spinal care
- Ear infections and bedwetting — conditions where many parents have reported positive results
A systematic review of chiropractic care for pediatric conditions found supportive evidence, particularly for musculoskeletal complaints.
What to Expect at Pure Wellness in Denham Springs
If you're considering bringing your family to Pure Wellness, here's what a visit looks like.
Dr. Rick R. Nash has over 30 years of chiropractic experience and specializes in tonal techniques that are ideal for patients of all ages — from newborns to grandparents. His approach is gentle, precise, and never forceful. There is no cracking, no twisting, and no sudden movements.
For pregnant patients, Dr. Nash takes a thorough history, performs a gentle evaluation, and adapts his technique to your stage of pregnancy. For infants and children, the assessment includes observing posture, movement patterns, and areas of tension. The adjustments themselves are quick, light, and often over before your child even realizes anything happened.
As a naturopathic practitioner and chiropractic assistant, I'm here to support you through the process — answering questions, explaining what's happening, and making sure you and your family feel comfortable and cared for. We also offer massage therapy that can complement chiropractic care beautifully during pregnancy and postpartum recovery.
Every family is different, and we tailor our recommendations to your specific needs.
Ready to learn more? Call our Denham Springs office at (225) 435-9229 or visit our contact page to schedule a consultation. We'd love to help your family feel their best.

### [Understanding Chiropractic Care: What to Expect on Your First Visit](https://www.bepurewell.com/blog/understanding-chiropractic-care/)
New to chiropractic care? Learn what happens during your first visit, how adjustments work, and what conditions chiropractic care can help with.
If you've never visited a chiropractor before, it's natural to have questions. What will happen during the appointment? Will it hurt? How long before you feel results? This guide walks you through what to expect at your first chiropractic visit at Pure Wellness.
What Is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care is a health discipline focused on the relationship between the nervous system and the body's ability to function and heal. Rather than simply treating symptoms, chiropractic looks at how well your nervous system is communicating with the rest of your body.
At Pure Wellness, Dr. Rick R. Nash brings over 30 years of experience and specializes in Tonal Chiropractic, a gentle approach that focuses on the overall tone of the nervous system. Unlike traditional manual chiropractic, tonal technique uses light, precise contacts on specific points along the spine to help restore proper nervous system function — without the twisting, cracking, or forceful manipulation many people associate with chiropractic care.
Your First Visit: Step by Step
1. Health History Review
We'll start by discussing your health history, current concerns, and wellness goals. Be prepared to share information about:
- Any pain or discomfort you're experiencing
- Past injuries or surgeries
- Medications and supplements
- Your daily activities and lifestyle
2. Physical Examination
Dr. Nash will perform a thorough examination that may include:
- Posture assessment
- Leg length analysis (checking for functional imbalances)
- Spinal palpation (feeling the spine for areas of tension or altered tone)
- Neurological evaluation
3. Discussion of Findings
After the examination, Dr. Nash will explain his findings and discuss a recommended treatment plan. This is your opportunity to ask questions and understand the approach.
4. Your First Adjustment
If appropriate, you may receive your first adjustment during the initial visit. With tonal chiropractic, adjustments involve a light, precise contact — often just a fingertip — applied to a specific point along the spine. There is no twisting, cracking, or forceful manipulation. Most patients are surprised by how gentle the process is, and many find it deeply relaxing.
Does It Hurt?
Tonal chiropractic is one of the gentlest forms of chiropractic care. The contacts are so light that some patients wonder if anything happened at all — until they notice the changes in how they feel. Some people experience mild shifts in energy or awareness as the nervous system recalibrates, but there is no pain or soreness associated with the adjustment itself.
Conditions Chiropractic Care Can Help With
Chiropractic care is commonly sought for:
- Back pain — one of the most common reasons people visit a chiropractor
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches and migraines
- Sciatica
- Joint pain in shoulders, hips, and knees
- Poor posture from desk work or daily habits
- Sports injuries
- General wellness and preventive care
How Many Visits Will I Need?
Treatment plans vary based on your condition and goals. Some patients feel significant improvement after just one or two visits. Others with chronic conditions may benefit from a longer course of care. Dr. Nash will work with you to develop a plan that fits your needs and budget.
Tips for Your First Visit
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement
- Arrive a few minutes early to complete any paperwork
- Bring a list of questions — we're happy to answer them
- Be honest about your health history and symptoms
- Stay hydrated before and after your appointment

### [Benefits of Infrared Sauna Therapy](https://www.bepurewell.com/blog/benefits-of-infrared-sauna-therapy/)
Discover the health benefits of infrared sauna therapy, from pain relief and detoxification to improved circulation and stress reduction.
Infrared sauna therapy is one of the most popular services at Pure Wellness, and for good reason. Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air around you, infrared saunas use light waves to penetrate the body directly, producing a deeper, more therapeutic heat at lower temperatures.
How Does Infrared Sauna Work?
Traditional saunas operate at temperatures of 150–190°F, which can feel overwhelming for many people. Infrared saunas work at a more comfortable 120–150°F while still delivering powerful therapeutic benefits. The infrared light penetrates up to 1.5 inches into the body, warming you from the inside out.
This deeper penetration means you get the benefits of heat therapy without the intense discomfort of conventional saunas.
Key Benefits
Pain Relief
Infrared heat increases blood flow and reduces inflammation, which can provide relief from:
- Chronic back and joint pain
- Muscle soreness and tension
- Arthritis symptoms
- Fibromyalgia discomfort
Detoxification
Sweating is one of the body's most natural ways to eliminate toxins. Infrared sauna therapy promotes a deep, productive sweat that can help your body release heavy metals and other stored toxins.
Improved Circulation
The heat from an infrared sauna stimulates blood flow, similar to the effects of moderate exercise. Improved circulation supports:
- Faster muscle recovery
- Better cardiovascular function
- Enhanced wound healing
- Healthier skin
Stress Reduction and Relaxation
Time in the infrared sauna activates your parasympathetic nervous system — your body's "rest and digest" mode. Regular sessions can help:
- Lower cortisol levels
- Improve sleep quality
- Reduce feelings of anxiety
- Promote overall relaxation
Skin Health
Increased circulation and sweating can improve skin tone, clarity, and elasticity. Many regular sauna users report healthier, more radiant-looking skin.
Weight Management Support
While infrared sauna is not a weight loss solution on its own, the increased heart rate and sweating during a session can burn calories and complement an active lifestyle.
What to Expect During a Session
At Pure Wellness, an infrared sauna session typically lasts 30–45 minutes. Here's what you should know:
- Hydrate — Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your session
- Wear comfortable clothing or use a towel — lightweight, breathable fabrics work best
- Start slowly — If you're new to infrared sauna, begin with shorter sessions and work your way up
- Listen to your body — It's normal to sweat heavily, but if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, step out
Combining Infrared Sauna with Other Therapies
Infrared sauna therapy pairs well with our other services at Pure Wellness:
- Chiropractic care — Heat relaxes muscles, making adjustments more effective
- Massage therapy — Pre-sauna warmth loosens tight tissue for deeper massage work
- Naturopathy — Sauna supports natural detox protocols recommended during naturopathic care
Ready to Try It?
Whether you're looking for pain relief, stress reduction, or a boost to your overall wellness routine, infrared sauna therapy is worth exploring.
Call our Denham Springs office at (225) 435-9229 or visit our contact page to book your session.
### [What Is Naturopathy? A Guide to Natural Healing](https://www.bepurewell.com/blog/what-is-naturopathy/)

Naturopathy is a form of health care that combines modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. At Pure Wellness, naturopathic care is a cornerstone of our practice, helping patients address the root causes of illness rather than just managing symptoms.
The Principles of Naturopathy
Naturopathic medicine is guided by several key principles:
- First, do no harm — Use the most natural and least invasive therapies first
- The healing power of nature — Trust the body's inherent ability to heal itself
- Identify and treat the cause — Look beyond symptoms to find underlying issues
- Treat the whole person — Consider physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual factors
- Prevention is the best cure — Focus on building health, not just fighting disease
- Practitioner as educator — Empower patients with knowledge to take charge of their own health
What Does a Naturopathic Consultation Look Like?
During your first visit, you can expect a thorough evaluation that goes beyond a typical doctor's appointment. We take time to understand:
- Your complete health history
- Current symptoms and concerns
- Diet and nutritional habits
- Lifestyle factors including sleep, stress, and exercise
- Environmental exposures
- Emotional and mental well-being
This comprehensive assessment allows us to develop a treatment plan that addresses your unique needs.
Common Naturopathic Therapies
Naturopathic practitioners draw from a wide range of natural therapies, including:
Nutritional Counseling
Food is medicine. We work with you to identify dietary changes that can have a profound impact on your health, from reducing inflammation to boosting energy levels.
Herbal Medicine
Plants have been used for healing for thousands of years. Modern naturopathy combines this traditional knowledge with scientific research to recommend safe, effective herbal remedies.
Lifestyle Modification
Small changes in daily habits — sleep patterns, stress management techniques, exercise routines — can lead to significant improvements in overall health.
Detoxification Support
Our bodies are exposed to toxins daily. Naturopathic approaches can support the body's natural detoxification processes through diet, supplementation, and therapies like infrared sauna.
Conditions That May Benefit from Naturopathy
Naturopathic care can complement treatment for a wide range of conditions:
- Digestive disorders
- Chronic fatigue and low energy
- Hormonal imbalances
- Skin conditions
- Allergies and sensitivities
- Stress and anxiety
- Weight management
- Autoimmune conditions

We're excited to welcome Dr. Rick R. Nash, a chiropractor with over 30 years of experience in Tonal Chiropractic, to the Pure Wellness team.
We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Rick R. Nash has joined the Pure Wellness team as our chiropractor. With over 30 years of experience in chiropractic care, Dr. Nash brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to helping patients achieve optimal health.
About Dr. Nash
Dr. Nash earned his undergraduate degree from Jackson State University and went on to graduate from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic — the founding institution of the chiropractic profession. His decades of practice have given him extensive expertise in treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.
Tonal Chiropractic Technique
Dr. Nash specializes in Tonal Chiropractic Technique, an approach that focuses on the tone of the nervous system rather than isolated structural adjustments. This method recognizes that the body functions as an integrated system, and that restoring proper neurological tone can have profound effects on overall health and wellness.
A Philosophy of Natural Healing
At the core of Dr. Nash's practice is a fundamental belief:
"Your body is a dynamic, self-healing, self-regulating organism."
This philosophy aligns perfectly with Pure Wellness's holistic approach to health care. Rather than simply treating symptoms, Dr. Nash works to identify and address the underlying causes of dysfunction, empowering the body's innate ability to heal itself.
Cash-Based Practice
Pure Wellness operates as a cash-based practice, which allows us to focus entirely on patient care without the constraints of insurance billing. This model means:
- More time with each patient during visits
- Personalized treatment plans tailored to your specific needs
- Transparent pricing with no surprise bills
- Freedom to provide the care we believe is best for you
